Dr. Hugo Sutton, MD, FRCSC

Clinical Associate Professor
Department of Ophthalmology, University of British Columbia

Dr. Hugo Sutton is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UBC. In 2013, he co-founded Central Eye Clinic in Surrey alongside General Manager Allan Cheung, in response to the growing demand for rapid-access diagnosis and treatment of acute eye care issues in British Columbia’s fastest-growing municipality.

Dr. Sutton earned his medical degree from the University of London in the UK. He began his career as a family physician in rural Grande Cache, Alberta, before completing his Ophthalmology residency at UBC. Since then, he has practised full-time in Vancouver, Richmond, and Langley, with additional locum work across BC and in Fort McMurray, Alberta (2006–2013).

With over 10,000 cataract surgeries and 40,000 laser refractive procedures to his name, Dr. Sutton has also contributed peer-reviewed papers and delivered presentations at conferences across North America. Since 2013, he has supervised more than 1,000 third-year UBC medical students at Central Eye Clinic and regularly hosts 3-month externships for final-year optometry students from the University of Waterloo.

He has also led the training of Central Eye Clinic’s 20+ multilingual technical staff, fostering a team that is knowledgeable, communicative, and committed to ensuring each patient is seen promptly, thoroughly, and with courtesy. All clinical procedures are managed on-site with a focus on patient safety and professional excellence.
